saison dupont belgian farmhouse style ale

saison dupont - 375 ml - 6.5% abv - belgian farmhouse ale

this cork popped with a mighty sound!

a nice golden color..like sparkling cider

smell - damp cellars, apples.....pepper and lemon..

mouthwise - fresh and alive with that yummy saison funkness to it, figs, wood, a bit o honey sweetness...plenty of carbonation for those awesome live yeast belches...

i cannot wait to get to the yeasty bottom and tell you about it...

this seems young..funky but young..not all that nuanced but maybe i need to try again...

port anniversary 4

port brewing 4th anniversary - a self proclaimed "hop monster"......10%

look - a rich orange-ish rust..

smell - orangey hops up front, a wonderful yogurt smell...if you like that kind of thing....,

taste - wow, still the yogurt....perfumed hops, calm malts and low carbonation lend a gentle mouthfeel to this one...the lack of carbonation is odd...not bad but..different....this lol...kinda tastes like keifer (look it up).....some peach to this...and floral..i would say orange blossom....

i have not had a beer this atypical in a while.....i will keep at it until i understand it..i have a few bottles..

i recommend it if you are into otherworldly ales...the hops are brave but not like a hopsickle (moyland's)..more like a hop tide (port brewing) but muted by the yogurt and orange flavors.....

avery fifteen

avery farmhouse ale - fifteenth anniversary - brewed with spices, herbs
and figs..hibiscus flowers, white pepper..mission figs and fermented
with 100% brettanomyces yeast.....

...
a soft gold color with always rising bubbles and small flakes of yummy
goodness rising then falling throughout....at first pour, then near the
bottom of the bottle (1pint - 6 oz) swish the remainder and you will see
a bounty of yeast sediment...which makes for an extra kick as the last
glass....

nose - sour cherries....then a softer note (that becomes more bold when
the cup is warmed by hand or otherwise) of that much loved "brett" or
"farmhouse" or "horse blanket" character....which in this particular ale
presents as wet hay, soft figs, horse piss, sawdust, a wonderful
must....a barn after a rain...

and in the mouth - tangy apple followed by musk melon then figs, and
here comes the farmhouse...soft apples....wet older hay...processed
grain....lemon pith, hardly any sweetness at all...i believe the batch
form years ago had more honey taste to it and yes....one can taste honey
but a wildflower honey with the sweetness taken out.....hmm......

one of my all time favorites

as dark as a cow's touchus on a night without the moon....nose....barleywineish..malty..brown sugar....coffee and some cacao...

in the mouth .......sweeeeeeeeeeeet..real sweet..some figs...choco.....too sweet for my taste really....drinking this one 12 oz will put a normal person to bed....

i will never drink this again....

days of wine and wine

IMG_0754

in the ultrasecret tasting room....this is such a bright whiskey...it tastes similar to the glenmo nectar d'or ..a tiny bit of sweet wine to it..odd in an american corn whisky..also there are flavors of corn hair...and a small amount of must from the husks...a decent amount of vegetal to it...$25.59 it says online but i haven't seen it anywheres local...

IMG_0682

corzo reposado tequila....peppery with a nice bite to it..but smooth..this is a sipper or for those higher end cocktails that don't add the kitchen sink.....

mata hari absinthe...a good one..not too syrupy like some of the lower quality fad absinthes...this is one from Czechoslovakia..not bold on licorice which is also the downfall of others...louches handsomely and has an interesting pearl effect in the mouth...makes the cheels warm...tingly...

IMG_0775-1

i have been drinking these lately...pickle shots..a tender at tony's place told me about them after i asked her for something not ordinary.....she keeps a jar of pickle juice in the fridge for another bartender and she poured me a shot..then three more..i loved it...the tequila she suggested - cazadores - works just perfect....i have tried others...not so much..and also...make sure the tender knows not to put the pickle juice and the tequila in the same glass..simple mistake but it tastes like shit...

IMG_0759

a recent haul from hi times...berentzen pear schnapps...tart and very pearlike...i hate schnapps ..well regular schnapps but this is wonderful..not syrupy or overbearing...also 4 bottles of my new favorite cheap beer...ranger from new belgium, they make fat tire...only $3.40 for the tall ones...hoppy like a careful craft beer and well balanced also...this tastes like a west coast ipa should...

ardbeg rollercoaster single malt islay whisky ....a blend of the last ten years..apt name because each character from each year weaves in and out in your mouth and nose then goes then some come back..some come back on the long finish...tabasco peppers, carbolic soap, grass, heather and peat...even a hint of asparagus on the finish...lemon and wintergreen....sourdough...yumm..

ballast point big eye pale ale...another great cheap one...small hops, malt that you can taste..not overbearing...about $3.40 a bottle...probably about 4.5%...a nice beer for mowing the lawn...

port brewing midnight sessions lager...a light (but pitch in color) lager...smoky taste..wood...a bit floral....around 5%.....

rogue chatoe gyo first growth organic.....this one was very crisp...i tried it a few weeks ago and to be truthing...i do not remember much of it...
